As soon as they saw the jumbo magnetic coordinate plane and dry erase pieces, they immediately wanted to come up to the board and start moving figures themselves. The hands-on aspect made the lesson feel more interactive and engaging right away.\r\n\r\nWe are currently using these materials during our Grade 8 transformations unit to help students explore translations, reflections, rotations, and dilations on the coordinate plane. The sticky coordinate pads and patty paper have been especially helpful for students who need a more visual and tactile approach to understanding how figures move and change. Students are tracing figures, physically rotating shapes, and checking their work by overlaying images, which has helped build confidence and accuracy.\r\n\r\nOne especially exciting classroom moment was watching students work collaboratively to determine whether a transformation preserved congruence. Instead of only looking at static examples on paper, they were able to manipulate the figures themselves and explain their reasoning to classmates using precise mathematical language.\r\n\r\nThese resources are also supporting our ICT classroom environment by giving students multiple ways to access the content visually, verbally, and hands-on. As we continue through the unit, students will use these tools to complete transformation stations, real-world mapping activities, and eventually create their own transformation designs on the coordinate plane. One of the first activities we will be using them for is a Math Cafe style review day, where students will rotate through stations to practice key skills in a more relaxed, collaborative setting. Having cups, plates, utensils, and napkins available will allow us to build in small treats and create a welcoming environment that encourages students to engage, work together, and feel comfortable taking academic risks.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials arrived, the students immediately noticed and were very curious about what we would be doing with them. Once I explained some of the ideas, they were genuinely excited and started asking when we would be having our first \"special\" activity. Even the simple addition of colorful cups sparked interest and helped build anticipation for upcoming lessons. It was great to see that level of enthusiasm before we have even begun using the supplies.\r\n\r\nNext, we will be incorporating these materials into upcoming review lessons and group-based activities as we prepare for assessments. I also plan to use them during \"celebration of learning\" days, where students can reflect on their progress and share their work with peers. Instead of quietly completing problem sets, students are now working in teams, debating strategies, explaining their thinking out loud, and genuinely excited about solving problems.\r\n\r\nJust last week during a review game on percents, I watched a group of students argue (politely!) about the best way to solve a percent increase problem. One student said, \"No, you have to find 10% first — it's easier!\" and another responded, \"Wait, I see a faster way!\" That moment — students confidently defending mathematical reasoning — is exactly what I hope for as a math teacher. And it happened because they were engaged in a game-based format that lowered the pressure and raised participation.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the reaction was immediate. There were literal cheers. One student said, \"Wait... we get to play math?\" Another asked if we could use them every day. For many middle schoolers, math can feel intimidating. Seeing their excitement and curiosity instead of hesitation was incredibly powerful.\r\n\r\nThese resources are now a regular part of our classroom routines. We use them for skill review before unit tests, small group intervention work, and even as enrichment challenges for students who are ready to extend their thinking. They've helped build confidence, especially for students who don't always raise their hands during whole-class instruction but thrive in collaborative settings.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we're using these games to prepare for our upcoming state exam. The next step for my students is applying multi-step problem-solving strategies under timed conditions — and the games allow us to practice those skills in a way that feels supportive rather than stressful. I'm already seeing growth in both accuracy and perseverance.\r\n\r\nYour generosity didn't just purchase materials — it created opportunities for discussion, collaboration, confidence, and joy in math.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in my students and in a classroom where learning is active, engaging, and empowering.","fullyFundedDate":1763592650383,"projectUrl":"project/building-math-confidence-one-game-at-a/9841890/","projectTitle":"Building Math Confidence, One Game at a Time!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Amarante","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9504613_orig.png?crop=398,398,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1741825273732","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9504613"},{"teacherId":1489253,"projectId":9698963,"letterContent":"The new resources have already started making a meaningful difference in our daily routines. Several commented on how helpful it is to have snacks and essentials available when they need them, and it made them feel supported and cared for.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward with our current lessons and projects, these resources will continue helping students stay prepared, comfortable, and ready to learn. The hydroponic seed starter kits and heirloom vegetable seeds are giving students the chance to connect algebra, measurement, and data analysis to real-life gardening. Students are charting plant growth in tables, creating graphs to track weekly changes, and calculating percentages to compare how different variables (such as light exposure or water levels) affect plant development. Meanwhile, the Astrobrights cardstock, jute twine, and metallic markers have been transformed into math journals and data displays where students record their findings and illustrate the math behind the science. This cross-curricular approach is helping them see how math is not just numbers on a page, but a tool to understand the world around them.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the students were instantly engaged and full of questions. Many of them were surprised that math could be applied in something as fun as gardening. As we set up the hydroponic trays, students began making predictions about plant growth, discussing ratios of water to nutrients, and debating how variables could be controlled—without even realizing they were practicing key math skills. The craft supplies added a creative layer, allowing students to design colorful data charts and plant labels, which made the project feel personal and exciting. Their enthusiasm turned our classroom into a buzz of energy, and the pride they took in \"owning\" their experiments was incredible to witness.\r\n\r\nLooking forward, students will continue to measure and analyze their plant growth over time, using linear equations and scatter plots to interpret their data. They'll compare results between groups, learning how to present their findings with clarity through charts and models they create with our craft supplies. As a culminating project, students will prepare STEM presentations that blend math, science, and design, showing not only how their plants grew, but also the mathematical reasoning behind their results. This project is helping them grow their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills—skills that will carry far beyond the math classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1755726713364,"projectUrl":"project/eco-explorers-hands-on-learning-for-cli/9344238/","projectTitle":"Eco Explorers: Hands-On Learning for Climate Awareness","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Murphy","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1489253_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1485359167185","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1489253"},{"teacherId":8973981,"projectId":7772562,"letterContent":"Thanks to the generosity of donors, my classroom received a collection of math-themed board games that have transformed how my students approach learning. They also create space for communication and teamwork, as students explain their thinking, debate strategies, and support one another. Beyond academic growth, these games have brought joy into the classroom and helped reduce math anxiety by showing students that learning math can be both fun and rewarding.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, this project promoted equity. Many of my students would not have access to these types of educational games outside of school.
