These projects will give students a fun and engaging way to explore concepts in math, science, and engineering while also helping them build teamwork skills and confidence.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, my students will have the opportunity to learn through play, think critically, and feel proud of their creations. The hydroponic seed starter kits and heirloom vegetable seeds are giving students the chance to connect algebra, measurement, and data analysis to real-life gardening. Students are charting plant growth in tables, creating graphs to track weekly changes, and calculating percentages to compare how different variables (such as light exposure or water levels) affect plant development. Meanwhile, the Astrobrights cardstock, jute twine, and metallic markers have been transformed into math journals and data displays where students record their findings and illustrate the math behind the science. This cross-curricular approach is helping them see how math is not just numbers on a page, but a tool to understand the world around them.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the students were instantly engaged and full of questions. Many of them were surprised that math could be applied in something as fun as gardening. As we set up the hydroponic trays, students began making predictions about plant growth, discussing ratios of water to nutrients, and debating how variables could be controlled—without even realizing they were practicing key math skills. The craft supplies added a creative layer, allowing students to design colorful data charts and plant labels, which made the project feel personal and exciting. Their enthusiasm turned our classroom into a buzz of energy, and the pride they took in \"owning\" their experiments was incredible to witness.\r\n\r\nLooking forward, students will continue to measure and analyze their plant growth over time, using linear equations and scatter plots to interpret their data. They'll compare results between groups, learning how to present their findings with clarity through charts and models they create with our craft supplies. As a culminating project, students will prepare STEM presentations that blend math, science, and design, showing not only how their plants grew, but also the mathematical reasoning behind their results. This project is helping them grow their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills—skills that will carry far beyond the math classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1755726713364,"projectUrl":"project/eco-explorers-hands-on-learning-for-cli/9344238/","projectTitle":"Eco Explorers: Hands-On Learning for Climate Awareness","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Murphy","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1489253_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1485359167185","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1489253"},{"teacherId":8973981,"projectId":7772562,"letterContent":"Thanks to the generosity of donors, my classroom received a collection of math-themed board games that have transformed how my students approach learning. These games give students a chance to practice essential skills like problem solving, logical reasoning, and critical thinking in a hands-on, engaging way. Instead of only seeing math through worksheets or tests, students now get to experience it as a collaborative, playful challenge.\r\n\r\nThe games have helped build perseverance and strategy, encouraging students to think several steps ahead, test out different approaches, and refine their reasoning. They also create space for communication and teamwork, as students explain their thinking, debate strategies, and support one another. Beyond academic growth, these games have brought joy into the classroom and helped reduce math anxiety by showing students that learning math can be both fun and rewarding.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, this project promoted equity. Many of my students would not have access to these types of educational games outside of school. Having them available in our classroom ensures that every child has the chance to build problem-solving skills in a supportive and inclusive environment. Students who once doubted their abilities in math now have opportunities to shine, and the excitement around these games has helped foster a stronger math community in our room.","fullyFundedDate":1695348433489,"projectUrl":"project/fostering-problem-solving-and-critical-t/7772562/","projectTitle":"Fostering Problem Solving and Critical Thinking Through Math Games!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Franklin","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8973981"},{"teacherId":8973981,"projectId":7210885,"letterContent":"Thanks to generous donor support, our after-school club received a full set of LEGOs that many of our students would not otherwise have access to. The LEGOs have sparked collaboration, problem-solving, and imaginative storytelling, giving students an outlet for creativity and teamwork after the school day.\r\n\r\nBeyond the fun, these LEGO sets have also helped students strengthen key STEM skills. As they design and build, they practice engineering thinking, test multiple solutions, and learn perseverance when their creations don't go as planned. The hands-on building has opened the door for lessons in math, geometry, and design, while also encouraging communication and leadership as students share ideas and work together.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, this project brought both joy and equity to our school community. Students who may not have the resources at home now feel included and empowered, knowing they can access the same opportunities as their peers. The laminating machine and decorative blades have been game changers for preserving student work and creating engaging materials. We recently completed a math vocabulary flipbook project, where students designed and laminated their own reference guides using colorful paper and pattern-edged scissors. These guides are now proudly displayed in their notebooks—and will last the rest of the year. I plan to do this for the entire year next year! The snacks have also helped foster a positive environment during small group work sessions, providing students with a quick, comforting boost.\r\nThey were beyond excited—especially about the craft tools and snacks! Many students commented on how \"official\" and professional their work looked once it was laminated and trimmed with decorative blades. They took extra care and pride in their creations, knowing their projects were being taken seriously. And of course, the snack box was an instant hit! It made our classroom feel warm and welcoming, especially for those who sometimes come to school without much to eat.\r\nNext, we're preparing interactive math stations for end-of-year review. Students will rotate through activities, many of which include laminated game boards, flashcards, and problem-solving mats they helped design. These stations will allow for movement, collaboration, and hands-on learning—all while using the materials you helped provide. The cleanliness and organization tools like the broom, wipes, and dustpan ensure we can keep everything sanitary and accessible as we rotate groups. These calculators allow students to focus on understanding mathematical concepts rather than getting stuck on lengthy computations. With this technology, they can explore patterns, test strategies, and solve complex problems with confidence. For many of my students, having access to a calculator outside of school for homework and studying has made a significant difference in their ability to practice and reinforce their learning.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting aspects of these new calculators is how they empower students to take ownership of their learning. I've seen students who once hesitated to participate in class now eagerly engaging with multi-step problems because they feel more capable. Many of them are fascinated by the different functions beyond basic operations, like using exponents or fractions with ease—features they had never used before. It's incredible to see their excitement when they discover a new function that makes their work easier and more efficient!\r\n\r\nOne student in particular, who recently arrived in the U.S. and is still gaining confidence with English, has really embraced this new technology. At first, they were hesitant to speak up in class, worried about making mistakes. But with the calculator, they've found a new level of independence and are now actively solving problems and even helping peers navigate the different features. Seeing that kind of growth and confidence blossom is exactly why these tools are so impactful.
