Sand trays and letter beads provide tactile practice of learned concepts during small group instruction that are scientifically shown to help students better retain content. Students who consistently missed breakfast and complained of being hungry were actually able to eat every single morning, thus focusing their attention on learning instead of a grumbling stomach. Being in first grade, it is often not their fault they are late to school, yet it still has major impacts on them. Even more important, the snacks purchased were healthy ones such as apple sauce and fruit bars. This fueled students to further their learning, as opposed to the usual crash of sugary snacks. It got them excited about eating healthy, as they felt so special when I brought out the box of snacks. It also strengthened school and family connections as their caregivers were very pleased to hear about the healthy snacks being eaten at school. \r\nMost important to this were the plastic bins and wire rack donated from this project, as without them, the mice and roaches would have immediately eaten all the snacks. But now, we can save extra snacks and breakfast foods in the air tight containers to prevent pests and give them to students who need them. I also have a place to keep our extra pairs of clean clothes so they are well organized and avoid dust and dirt. Prior to this donation, our only air purifier was six years old, broken, with no new filters. When we first plugged in the air purifier it read 500 PM2.5 which is pretty much the maximum of air particles it could read. After a few weeks of use, it is now down to under 100. There used to be a strong odor from our classroom bathroom, but the air purifier has helped the smell immensely. There is significantly less dust and now the students have fewer headaches and can focus better. Your donation truly means a better learning experience for students.
