This particular project has already helped me give better resources to my classroom. Here are two examples from this week. First, I needed better math tests for my fifth graders. The ones the other teachers use are computer-based multiple choice tests. I like handwritten tests where the answers are open ended and the students can show their work right next to the problem. I was able to purchase all 11 chapter tests for the grade level. \r\n\r\nMy second example is: I was looking for a new way to teach 9/11 to my students. I have older students this year who don't want to gloss over such an important topic. I was able to purchase a quality lesson that will make the students think and understand the seriousness of this terrible day in our nation's history.\r\n\r\nThese are just two examples. I am so excited to get these books into the hands of my students as soon as possible. Here is a rationale as to why these particular books were chosen: Over the summer, I made a list of books I had heard of that were recommended by librarians, fellow teachers, etc. Once I had enough books, I created this project.\r\n\r\nI am always on the lookout for books with themes that kids want to read and relate to. For instance, there is a heartfelt tale called \"Hachiko Waits\" about a dog who faithfully waits for his owner every day at the train station after work. When his owner passes away, Hachiko continues to wait daily for over a year! Another example is called \"Tree Girl.\" It is by the author of another one I read this summer called \"Petey\", which made me cry ugly tears. I am hoping this one is just as good.\r\n\r\nThis project also includes some lighthearted reads. There is a book about some creepy rabbits that don't want to eat their veggies, and another one about kids who are banned from their cell phones, so they communicate via sticky notes. As you can see, I try to get books that appeal to all of the varied interests of my students. I was able to use some of the materials from this project to help my summer birthday kids feel special.\r\n\r\nThis project also allowed me to get some lamination sheets. The lamination at school is just so cheap in quality. The kids even notice when I laminate their work that there are bubbles, it gets cut off, etc. Laminating with these high-quality sheets made possible by this project has made my students smile. In order for their lives to be saved, they have to go out to the countryside to live with strangers for the duration of the war. It's really a high-interest book for the kids.\r\n\r\nThe \"half set\" requested is \"The Lemonade War\". Such a fun book! Two siblings battle it out to see who can have the best lemonade stand. \r\n\r\nI cannot wait to get started with these novels with next year's class. Kids in 4th grade are often turning from 9 to 10, which is a big deal; they are in the double digit club! It makes them feel good for their teacher to acknowledge their birthday. I decorate the students desk with various items such as: rubber bracelets, stickers, candy, bookmarks, a birthday certificate, and of course, confetti! They love it!\r\n\r\nA few of the other items that I am very excited about are the plastic folders. Students use these as homework folders (things that go home and come back) and desk folders (papers we use only here at school). This helps with organization. I am also thankful for the laminating pouches and the computer mice.
