There has been a lot of movement in my classroom, especially since I am still trying to adjust to my first year, but your donations really helped out my classroom a lot.\r\n\r\nWhen my students saw me with the box of new books, a lot of them quickly smiled, and in less than 10 minutes, most of those books were already checked out by my students, hence the reason I couldn't take as many pictures as those books are now checked out by the students. Most of them were especially thrilled to see the Harry Potter books in Spanish, as they have only found them in English prior.\r\n\r\nAs previously mentioned, I teach dual language 5th ELA and SLA. Due to the limited time I have with my students, there is not always a time for us to have independent reading time; but, at least once a week students may choose to read a book if they had finished all their other work for my class. Occasionally, I would ask students to write me a summary or to find the theme of a book, which was a skill we were working on throughout our first semester. Through the summaries, I have noticed growth in my students to achieve the 5th grade standards of finding theme, using details to support their ideas, and summarizing. \r\n\r\nMost of my students are Spanish dominant, but I still want to enhance their English language proficiencies. Because I surveyed my students at the beginning of the year, I discovered that majority of them appreciated graphic novels. Thanks to your generosity, I was able to provide graphic novels for my classroom library. Those were my most popular books yet. As I walked around the classroom, I noticed students grabbing the English graphic novels as well. Many told me they used the images to help them read, which is a skill I have thought them to use when reading an English book, or any complex book that may have images as a support. Because of this skill, many of my students actually improved on their middle of the year tests. \r\n\r\nLastly, the stools. Originally I wanted these stools for small group time, or during interventions. However, a lot of my students actually ended up liking them, and ask me to use it as flexible seating options. They also used the stools during group work, and they like going together to the library to work on a given assignment. \r\n\r\nOnce again, my class and I really appreciate all you have done for our classroom this year. They enjoy the books and the seats, and I am proud of the improvements that they are making. Technology today in our school is used to support students in a variety of ways: visually by bringing the learning to life through the use of videos, images, annotating text. Students are able to listen to text to help support language development and comprehension. Students use technology to demonstrate learning through the creation of videos, slide presentations, an essay and images. Learning is monitored through the use of technology with online assessments and digital programs that support the learning such as Freckle, Lexia and Skyline curriculum. \r\n\r\nThe new earbuds were received with great enthusiasm from the students. The variety of colors were captivating and when they had choice it created great interest in using them immediately. The earbuds are compact and students love to control the volume. Students spent more time on their digital tools since each student had their own to use. This minimized movement, distractions and preparation to dive into their learning. It was also a safer alternative when each student had their own pair and didn't need to share with another student. \r\n\r\nAll students in grades third to eighth are benefitting from the use of the earbuds. The day the boxes started arriving I placed them on the table in the back. Each day the sun was shining and the kids came in complaining they had nothing to play with outside. Finally once the last box arrived I opened it in front of my homeroom. They were so incredibly excited as volleyball is a sport they always want to talk about. I am blessed to be apart of a volleyball community having a child who has fallen in love. We immediately grabbed the electric pump from the gym teacher and took them out to recess. What I didn't realize is how jealous all the kids would be when they saw my homeroom coming out. I quickly explained to the whole middle school that this was a gift from kind people for all of them to play together. \r\n\r\nStudents from different homerooms and different backgrounds began to laugh and play together. The teachers had been trying to figure out how to make it happen all year. The simple act of a volleyball in their hands brought them together. I went out the first week to correct some passing, show some student show to set, and to show off my high school volleyball skills :).
