Your donation gave my students an opportunity that many of them would never have had otherwise—an opportunity to get their hands in the soil, to grow something from nothing, and to learn a skill that could benefit them for a lifetime.\r\nMany of my students face hardships that extend far beyond the classroom. Some are caretakers for their younger siblings while their parents work long hours, leaving them with little time to simply be kids. Others struggle with housing instability, bouncing between relatives' homes or temporary living situations where planting a garden is the last thing on their minds. For them, this project was more than just an academic lesson—it was a rare chance to slow down, nurture something, and see the results of their care.\r\nOf course, the journey was not without challenges. As middle schoolers, they learned the hard way that plants require consistent attention. At one point, nearly 90% of our young seedlings were lost due to inefficient watering over a long four-day weekend when no one was there to care for them. It was a tough lesson, but also a powerful one—failure is part of growth. When we restarted, they took their responsibilities more seriously, problem-solved together, and ultimately gained a deeper appreciation for what it truly takes to grow food.\r\nThe most rewarding part? A few students became so inspired by our project that they took plants home to start their own small gardens. One student excitedly told me they planted green onions in a small pot by their kitchen window, while another convinced their family to start a tomato plant on their apartment balcony. These moments, though small, are exactly why this project mattered. It gave them the realization that growing your own food is not only possible, but actually kind of cool.\r\nMoving forward, the tools and supplies from this project will continue to be used year after year. Future students will have the opportunity to experience growing their own food, learning from past mistakes, and gaining the hands-on knowledge that comes with trial and error. We plan to improve our watering system so that long weekends did set us back, and we hope to expand what we grow as students become more confident in their gardening skills. Your donation has provided the foundation for a lasting project that will continue to impact students for years to come.\r\nYour generosity made this possible.
