The Zanib Mian, Planet Omar series is a good fit for my students; therefore, we are incredibly appreciative of your generosity. The boys were in awe when they received your gifts. They had not realized that strangers care about them, their interests, and their education. Through you, they had pleasurable reading experiences that strengthened their love of books and reading, and they are anxious to read Planet Omar books 3 and 4. \r\n\r\nWhether the cool boys read their books during book club, huddled around their teacher's desk, independently in the classroom, or at home, they continued to share Omar's adventures with me. This series sparked their interest and kept them engaged because of the graphic novel format and the relatable situations Omar found himself in. My Muslim and non-Muslim students alike were able to identify with Omar, an African American adolescent boy like themselves. They appreciated the humorous, mischievous ways he overcame the obstacles of being a new student in his school. They cheered Omar on as he had to overcome the challenges of racism and find ways to cope with his feelings while classmates were trying to make him feel inferior. Students who are new to my school could relate to the challenges Omari faces as he finds his way in a new school, tries to fit in, and strives to make friends. \r\n\r\nAs my book club students began book 2, Planet Omar, Unexpected Super Spy, they became totally immersed in the reading experience. They anxiously shared their progress with me, smiling and feeling proud. \r\n\r\n\r\nThank you for adding joy to my Cool Boys Reading Book Club and for supporting its purpose: to encourage students to read for pleasure, thus helping them become lovers of books and learning.","fullyFundedDate":1766430688150,"projectUrl":"project/cool-boys-reading-book-club/9935268/","projectTitle":"Cool Boys Reading Book Club","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Chappelle","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1687702"},{"teacherId":1687702,"projectId":9889045,"letterContent":"\r\nThank you for sponsoring my Ad Prima Charter School's Grade 4, Black Girls' Magic Book Club. The B.B. Alston's Amari trilogy is a good fit for my students; therefore, we are extremely appreciative of your generosity. The girls were a bit humbled to learn that strangers care about them, their interests, and their education. Through you, they had pleasurable reading experiences that strengthened their love of books and reading. They could hardly contain themselves when the books arrived, and are looking forward to reading book 4 in the series after it comes out in February.\r\n\r\nAs the book club girls read Amari and the Night Brothers, either with the book club, huddled around their teacher's desk, independently in the classroom, or at home, they continued to share Amari's escapades with me. Regardless of their thoughts on magic, the girls identified with Amari, an African American adolescent girl. They appreciated how Amari overcame the obstacles of being one of the only African American students in her first school, and how she eventually learned about her secret magical powers once she arrived at her brother, Quinton's, school. Again, at that school, our protagonist had to overcome racism and find ways to cope with feelings of inferiority about her magical powers. My newly admitted students were able to relate to the challenges Amari faces adjusting to a new school and striving to make friends. \r\n\r\nThe book club was totally immersed in book 2, Amari and the Great Game. They lived in Amari's magical realm because their hero found her brother and saved the supernatural world. The club was deeply concerned that Quinton might die, so they read the book with passion to learn his fate. They were disappointed in Amari for not accepting the League of Magicians' offer of supreme leadership. Amari's decision sparked a few heated discussions among my students about which character would become the Night Brother. They pleaded with Amari to accept the position for two reasons: one being that Quinton could be saved, and the other being that the supernatural world needed a strong, honest, ethical leader; Amari had these characteristics.\r\n\r\n The book club students were pleasantly surprised to have their hands on book 3, which was sent to us in hardcover. The girls continued their journey into a world of magic, danger, and mythical creatures. Some of my students anticipated Amari's demise and, therefore, were reluctant to finish the book. They initiated numerous discussions about how B.B. Alston could choose an ending for their beloved Amari, their hero. The girls wanted to read much of this book with their teacher and me, as they needed comfort as the plot climaxed. Their sadness did not linger because Quinton was cured from his spell and the supernatural world survived. \r\n\r\nThe Black Girls' Magic Book Club is looking forward to reading book #4 when it comes out in February 2026.
