Reading this novel has allowed students to learn about the lasting impact of September 11 through an engaging story told from two very different points of view. As students follow Brandon, an American boy inside the World Trade Center on 9/11, and Reshmina, an Afghan girl whose brother joins the Taliban, they are learning about perspective, conflict, historical context, and the ways a single event can affect people across countries and generations. The contrasting viewpoints have encouraged students to look beyond simple assumptions and consider how a person's circumstances can shape what they believe and the choices they make.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom currently looks like students following along in their books while listening to the audiobook. This combination has made the story accessible to every student, including those who may struggle with reading independently. The room becomes remarkably quiet while we read, and students are genuinely eager to discover what happens next. Even students who do not usually consider themselves readers are following the plot, reacting to suspenseful moments, and asking questions about 9/11 and Afghanistan.\r\n\r\nMy hope for this novel study is not to overwhelm students with assignment after assignment and unintentionally take away the joy of reading. Instead, I want them to understand the human impact of 9/11, develop empathy for people whose experiences differ from their own, and discover that a book can be both meaningful and enjoyable. Your generosity has given my students the opportunity to experience history through a story that has truly captured their attention. Thank you for helping create such a meaningful reading experience in our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1787192682050,"projectUrl":"project/911-will-not-be-forgotten/10371236/","projectTitle":"9/11 Will Not be Forgotten","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Jones","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7485210_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1598475037850","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7485210"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_9811","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":544,"numTeachers":33,"percentFrplEligible":40,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":5,"percentWhite":57,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":29,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":4,"gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"16.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":91.7,"schoolId":9811,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Academy High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Academy High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/academy-independent-school-district/academy-high-school/9811"}
