We use the materials daily in small groups and individualized lessons, where students practice recognizing sight words, building fluency, and gaining confidence as readers. One meaningful moment was watching a student independently read a full set of sight words they had previously struggled with—something that felt truly achievable because of these hands-on, engaging resources.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, they were thrilled. They immediately wanted to explore them, asking if we could start using them right away. For students who often feel anxious about reading, their excitement and willingness to try something new was especially powerful. The materials felt approachable and fun, which helped lower frustration and increase motivation.\r\n\r\nBy supporting this project, you were able to step inside our classroom and see the impact of your generosity firsthand. Right now, students are continuing to build their foundational reading skills by using these resources to strengthen word recognition and reading stamina. Our next steps include applying these skills to short passages, guided reading activities, and independent practice so students can transfer what they're learning into real reading success. Because of you, my students are gaining confidence, celebrating progress, and beginning to see themselves as capable readers.","fullyFundedDate":1761589318515,"projectUrl":"project/building-confident-readers-through-engag/9857924/","projectTitle":"Building Confident Readers Through Engaging and Structured Literacy","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Schuster","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10329638_orig.jpg?crop=1414,1414,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1761571644657","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10329638"},{"teacherId":9853398,"projectId":9863507,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, our classroom has been buzzing with excitement and engagement. Having file dividers to separate student work has allow for easier access to work. Our students are also actively using the writing center materials to create artwork, write pieces, and work in their journals, which has strengthened both their creativity and literacy skills.\r\n\r\nIn addition, the magnifying glasses have turned learning into an exciting exploration as students search for and identify the high-frequency words they are learning. With the funds, I purchased all of the materials needed to set up a listening area in the classroom, including a durable, easy to use CD player, headphones and a splitter to allow multiple students to listen to the story at once, and a sturdy wire shelf custom built to hold the player and headphones. I also bought about 15 book/CD packs so that I can offer a fresh selection every few weeks. With the remaining funds, I purchased an organizing shelf for the classroom's writing area. \r\n\r\nThe Listening Center is now one of the most popular options. Students are coming to hear some of their favorite books read and re-read to them set to music and with user-friendly \"turn the page\" signals to help them track their place in the book. They are developing a love for lsitening to literature and sharing stories with others that will be very important in helping them become literate adults. \r\n\r\nIn our Writing Center, students have one of their only chances in an otherwise heavily scripted and directed school day to draw/write about topics of their own choosing. As such, it is another quite popular center. Thanks to the new organizer, I can offer them a much greater selection of writing media (markers, colored pencils, multi-cultural crayons) as well as more options for places on which to practice writing that include both paper and LCD writing tablets. This helps me to rescue writing from being a boring task that was foisted upon them and nurtures a more authentic, student-centered engagement with the act of writing. \r\n\r\nThanks to these improvements, our classroom is measurably more vibrant and alive with the sights and sounds of a blossoming love of literacy during the hands-on learning centers portion of our school days.
