Our old cushions had been donated by a teacher that was retiring, and they were getting a little on the stinky side!\r\n\r\nIt means a lot for me as a teacher to be able to provide a space for my students to just be. It allows me to forge better relationships with them, and models the importance of self-care. \r\n\r\nIn terms of our Brain Model, I am starting the Biology of Psychology unit with my students tomorrow, and am excited to use the model to provide a more kinesthetic approach to what is a very challenging unit. Students have also already enjoyed taking it apart and putting it back together outside of class time, just out of curiosity. That to me means that it is an effective tool for engagement!\r\n\r\nAgain, thank you all. Students of East LA have a lot to contend with right now, a lot of worries. But they are also wonderful, intelligent, sensitive kids who deserve care and high quality instruction. You are now a direct part of making that happen.","fullyFundedDate":1750133940949,"projectUrl":"project/brain-breaks/9409617/","projectTitle":"Brain, Breaks","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lewi","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10054700_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1749681041005","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10054700"},{"teacherId":9527780,"projectId":8963732,"letterContent":"We are using the reading corner with its beanbags, poufs, rugs, and books every day. The students LOVE the comfy seating and sometimes have to be gently encouraged to come back to their assigned seats! They can listen to audiobooks and music, work on their Chromebooks, and read from any genre in our comfortable reading corner. \r\n\r\nNot only that, but students seek out this quiet, cozy space everyday before school, during lunch, and after school, making this a safe place at school for them to decompress, refocus, and calm their anxiety when needed. \r\n\r\nI have plans to create more dedicated spaces for students to read, reflect, and study within our school. We appreciate your funding and support for this project that is one small step towards having more student-centered spaces. It is awesome to see how people still place high value on safe, quiet, reflective spaces where students can be themselves literarily, socially, and personally. Students can see step by step worked out solutions to complex problems. It is also a great tool to allow student volunteers to show samples of their work and present to the whole class. The students are excited because they can be leaders in the classroom. Instead of always hearing the teacher do the talking, students can take charge of their learning by modeling lessons to their peers. All students benefit from this teaching and learning tool. Additionally, with the help of the wireless keyboard and mouse, students are able to move around the room during their modeling and control what is on the promethean board wirelessly. My students are excited to come to my class where the room environment is inviting and fun with colorful images and music unlike a traditional classroom. Furthermore, I have very different levels of students in my math classes. My artists and gamers favored the projector immediately because they can use it to trace art onto big poster paper and showcase their projects to the whole class. The laptops have allowed my Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Advisory students easy access to technology where they can use Desmos, Deltamath, IXL and many other math platforms to practice math concepts. All levels of students including my special education and gifted students are able to conduct research on math applications in real life (aviation, rockets launching, bridge building, etc.) and use the laptops to write and apply for college applications. It is extremely beneficial to have 3 additional mac laptops at our disposal in addition to the chromebooks we have at our school. Exposure to technology allowed my students to utilize 21st century skills to conduct STEM projects: rocket launching and aviation with paper airplanes.
