I created a calm space where they can come in when they feel overwhelmed, take a moment to breathe, and talk about what is going on. I use the materials during one-on-one check-ins to help them name their emotions, practice coping skills, and work on things like grounding and self-reflection.\r\n\r\nOne moment that stands out is working with a few students who were going through very difficult situations emotionally, academically, and at home. Because I had these resources, I was able to support them consistently, not just in hard moments but over time. I have seen real growth. Students who used to struggle to express themselves are now opening up, asking for help, and using the tools on their own. Many of them are now doing so much better and truly thriving.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, they were excited. They wanted to explore everything right away. What made it even more special is that they helped me decorate and set up the materials. The snacks, games, and utensils have made an impression. I am part of the school's support team. But we're in my office every day, and with these resources, some students look for a bit of a change of pace. They can use those, whether they require such help to recoup and replenish energy, or maybe some time away from their studies in need. The snacks have been particularly useful for students who may come in feeling overwhelmed, distracted, or simply hungry. Being able to provide something small for them to eat helps make them feel cared for and gives them a better sense of regulation and refocus. The utensils facilitate this support in a neat and organized manner. The games have been immensely important, too. They offer students a positive and constructive way to relax, build trust, and practice social skills. I've utilized them for that one-on-one support, as well as in small-group work, and they've contributed to creating moments of connection that matter. But a kid who was struggling could be calm and receptive while playing a simple game—turning a tough day into something positive. After viewing the materials, students were thrilled and became active. It had helped build a welcoming, safe space for them to come in and ask for support. I will continue using these resources in the future to support students' emotional well-being, social development, and readiness to learn. But the first—and largest—issue I faced was that I didn't have enough games to begin with. I had one copy of Scrabble, an ancient copy of Blurt, and a couple copies of a morpheme card game that I'd picked up at an ELA conference. I certainly didn't have enough for every student to be able to play simultaneously, let alone enough games to make it a challenging and different experience for students each and every month.\r\n\r\nI was lucky to receive a number of donations during Giving Tuesday, and the additional games made the monthly game day even more exciting. I began to notice quickly, however, that some games were more popular than others, Scrabble and Tapple amongst them. So, I created this Donors Choose to round out my collection, including enough copies of Tapple so that every group of students can play simultaneously—something that will come in handy when I repurpose the game as a way to review the books we read!\r\n\r\nI'm so happy to say that my students have LOVED this new addition to my curriculum. They look forward to Vocab Game Days. On those days, without fail, laughter fills the room and the joy is palpable. The best part is the knowledge that they are actively improving their grammar, vocabulary, and spelling skills. They pay more attention to their spelling now. They ask me what words mean. It's wonderful to see the ways that these games have piqued their curiosity about the parts of ELA students tend to dread most. \r\n\r\nNow, when I announce it's Vocab Game Day, I'm met with cheers, because they're SO excited to play. I have you to thank for that. Thank you so much for helping me to grow my curriculum and my classroom in new and novel ways. It started with one text from my best friend to her husband's family, and then from there, texts started floating around, and before I knew it, the project funding was complete. It is humbling to see the graciousness and generosity of people toward my students. \r\n\r\nLawn games are a social way to introduce students to basic patterns of movement that are seen in other sports. The ultimate frisbees will be awesome come the springtime, when we can go outside to the fields. Learning how to throw and catch a Frisbee allows students to engage in a number of activities, including ultimate frisbee, Kan-Jam, disc golf, Polish Horseshoes and more! The spikeball sets will also be great to use in the springtime outside. Such a game helps students with hand-eye coordination and teamwork, adding in a volleyball-like feel, which is very popular in this district. The spikeball nets have already been used in after-school Open Gym and will be quickly added to the standard PE curriculum once scheduling is finalized. Although students have not yet been able to utilize the majority of this equipment, they will soon. For the semester final, one group has chosen to do Basic Frisbee, and the students were really excited to be the first ones to use the brand new frisbees :)\r\n\r\nMy students always light up when they see new equipment in my closet. My hope was to get creative with the equipment order in such a way that all things purchased could be used for various different activities. The floor tape came in super handy for the volleyball unit we completed- it eliminated the uncertainty of whether or not a ball was in or out. Kids knew if the ball bounced inside or on the line, it was in. Anything landing outside the boundary marker was out. I plan to use the tape when we have nets for pickleball and badminton. Eventually, I will also do 4-square and you already know, we need boundaries for that!\r\n\r\nSome of the materials in this order are specific to various games from other countries. I find there to be a wonderful benefit to exposing students to sports from other cultures because it helps them develop a sense of appreciation and respect for things that are different. The tchoukball rebound nets will be used in our Games from other Countries unit, which we just started. The dodgeballs were used for lead up games to Team Handball and I am sure that they will be used again.\r\n\r\nThe floor markers have been amazing to help establish crease boundaries for Team Handball. Having a clear visual that students can see helps eliminate confusion during gameplay. Much of the equipment that has been purchased has been used for all school events which has been a blessing. \r\n\r\nMy students always light up when they see new equipment in my closet. We also use the text to study narrative structure and themes—particularly identity, ambition, family responsibility, and gender expectations in the 19th century, which naturally translate into the sociological study of women in the home, in education, and at work. \r\n\r\nReading \"Little Women\" in our classroom is an active, collaborative experience!
