After spending time drawing animals, creatures, and imaginative hybrids on paper, they're now bringing those drawings to life in 3D. Watching them translate a flat sketch into a sculpted form has been nothing short of incredible. One of my favorite moments was seeing a student who rarely participates suddenly light up when she realized she could build the little owl-dragon she had designed. She kept turning the clay in her hands, amazed that she could make something so real.\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the students reacted with pure joy—true, unfiltered excitement. Many of them have limited access to art supplies outside of school, so seeing stacks of fresh clay felt like a gift made just for them. There were gasps, cheers, and even a few \"Are we really allowed to use all of this?!\" Their gratitude was immediate and heartfelt.\r\nBecause of your generosity, our next steps are incredibly exciting. Students are now refining their sculptures, adding textures, carving details, smoothing surfaces, and preparing their pieces for drying and painting. We will be exploring positive and negative space, structure, and form, and discussing how artists use 3D work to communicate personality and emotion. Once their creatures are complete, we plan to create a small classroom gallery so they can proudly display their work for peers, families, and our school community.\r\nYour kindness didn't just fund a project—you helped create a moment of wonder, confidence, and creativity for so many students. They've kept our students fueled through the PSATs and SATs, through the end of quarter three, during long afternoons playing pick up basketball in the gym, and sunny afternoons lounging under trees on campus. Thanks to your kindness, my 10th grade students received high-quality liquid watercolors and watercolor paper—materials that allowed them to explore a whole new level of artistic expression. Your donation didn't just supply art supplies; it gave my students the opportunity to engage with professional-quality tools and feel like real artists.\r\n\r\nBefore this project, my students primarily worked with traditional oval watercolor palettes, which limited their ability to experience the vibrant color saturation and layering techniques possible with liquid watercolor. Once the new materials arrived, it was clear from the first brushstroke how much of a difference they would make. The vivid, intense hues of the liquid watercolors immediately caught their attention. Students were inspired to experiment with color mixing, layering, and creating subtle gradients—something that was much harder to achieve with the limited palettes they were used to.\r\n\r\nThe project we completed with these materials focused on close-up watercolor paintings. Students selected images of natural subjects—flowers, fruits, leaves, insects—and enlarged them to fill the space of the watercolor paper. This not only helped them improve their observational drawing skills but also pushed them to pay close attention to detail, form, and value. The close-up format allowed them to really dive into the textures, colors, and subtle transitions within their subject matter.\r\n\r\nWith the new liquid watercolors, my students learned how to control the flow of paint and water, how to layer washes to build value, and how to create soft, blended transitions. These are advanced techniques that are difficult to execute without the right materials. The watercolor paper held up beautifully, allowing them to work confidently without fear of the paper buckling or tearing. For many students, this was their first time using materials of this quality, and their pride in the finished work reflected that. They felt respected and empowered by having access to \"real\" artist supplies.\r\n\r\nOne of the most rewarding parts of this experience was watching students who typically hesitate with painting fully immerse themselves in the process. I witnessed students encouraging one another, discussing how they achieved certain effects, and taking creative risks they might not have taken before. The classroom was buzzing with excitement and curiosity. It was a joy to watch them grow—not just in skill, but in confidence.\r\n\r\nMany of my students don't have access to art supplies at home, and school is the only place they can explore this kind of creative expression. Because of you, they were able to experience watercolor painting in a way that felt meaningful, sophisticated, and fun. I truly believe this experience will stick with them—and for some, it may even spark a lifelong love of art.\r\n\r\nThank you for being a part of our classroom and for investing in the creativity and growth of my students. Your support made this beautiful experience possible, and we are so grateful for your generosity.","fullyFundedDate":1742950376295,"projectUrl":"project/watercolor-close-up/9136858/","projectTitle":"Watercolor Close Up","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ossen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9454700_orig.jpg?crop=2012,2013,x0,y416&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1707060516390","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9454700"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_43820","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":725,"numTeachers":84,"percentFrplEligible":69,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":32,"percentWhite":5,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":56,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"8.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":69.0,"schoolId":43820,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about A.I.
