Zoom Visit, Oscar-Nominated Filmmaker, Speaker On Emmett Till Part 2
Help me give my students the life-changing opportunity of a Zoom visit with an Oscar-Nominated Filmmaker who will speak about his film about Emmett Till.
My students reflect the cultural richness of New York City - and they speak approximately 34 different languages among them!
Our school is an academically rigorous, tuition-free high school and college associate's degree program.
Many of my students are the first in their families to attend college. They are very eager for the opportunity to earn two years of free college tuition at the time of their high school graduation.
It is incredibly rewarding to work with such curious, eager, and motivated students as their virtual Library Director, Creative Writing Teacher and Speaker Series Coordinator.
My Project
Kevin Wilson, Jr.'s Oscar-nominated film, MY NEPHEW EMMETT, imagines a dark moment in American history: the last night in the life of Emmett Till, an African-American 14 year-old child who was kidnapped from his own home, and lynched. Mr. Wilson will speak to students about his inspiration, research process, use of archival footage, and his compassionate imagining of this night from Till's uncle's perspective. He will speak about how he became a filmmaker fighting for social justice.
In my Guest Writers class, we meet authors or artists, and after experiencing their work, we learn the "behind the scenes" of their process.
Students facilitate the discussion with creators, interviewing so the event is driven by student curiosity. These events are filmed for posterity, so students of future generations can enjoy them.
The goal of this course is to investigate the human side of writing and filmmaking, and the cooperative process of directing. We will also gain new insight into the world of Emmett Till, and this deplorable, racist event in America's history. We will discuss more recent events in America that have been horrifying and unconscionable. We will talk about how relentlessly we must fight against ignorance on a daily basis.
