My Project

Students have been reading and writing about the poetry, fiction and essays by Bushra Rehman, who writes feminist work about being a Muslim-American first-generation girl growing up in Queens. They are gaining creative and analytical skills, as well as learning about a culture and religion. Now students want to engage more deeply and interview the author and ask for advice on their own writing. Students will learn about the process of writing, revising, and getting a book ready to publish.

Students love Rehman's book, Colonize This: Today's Young Women and Feminism, and her new novel, Roses In the Mouth of a Lion!

My guest writer students have read her work carefully and written analytical papers as well as creative pieces, poems, and fiction. They have also worked on a list of questions for the author, and they are all prepared to interview her about the inspiration behind the book and her writing process. Through learning about Ms. Rehman as an author, students will gain insight into the process of writing books and the self-reflection and dedication necessary to become a writer, activist, or any kind of professional.

All students in the school are invited to attend the author event. The students in my guest writers' class will lead the Q&A, but the audience will be comprised of anyone who wants to attend.
