Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
At our Middle School, we have a program called Reading Zone. This is where the entire school reads quietly to themselves for twenty minutes. It is an extension of our Advisory period and adds up to about eighty minutes a week. I have witnessed students' reading skills improve throughout the year. I have found that playing instrumental music at a low volume keeps the students from chatting and allows them to concentrate more. On Wednesdays, we have an "extended" Advisory, which allows us to spend time with students on a more social level. This is where I learned that a group of students are really into The Cure, I show them some licks on my guitar,, but they are hungry for more than just that. Most of these supplies will allow our classroom to become a more creative space where students can explore the talents within them, so that they can become fulfilled individuals and active compassionate citizens. This really is always the goal.
