Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Many of the students at my school, as well as my resource room students, are from an impoverished environment. Shortly after school began this fall, I asked a student if he had ever been to the zoo. When he answered that he had not, I began checking with other students. He was not alone. The zoo is only about 30 or 40 minutes away. I was shocked!

When I asked them if they would be interested in going to the zoo if I could get a grant that would fund the trip, they were ecstatic! The school budgets in our state have had drastic budget cuts. We have lost staff positions, as well as monies for other areas. We are anticipating further budget cuts after the first of the year. There are NO monies for field trips.

We need to pay for a bus to take us to the zoo, as well as for admission to the zoo and for the classes. Many of my students have limited vocabularies and experiences. A trip, such as this will provide a wonderful opportunity to enrich their understanding of animal life. Further, after leaving the zoo, we can walk across the park to the Discovery Center where they can have a "hands on experience" with science-related materials--for free. There is no cost for schools who have the number of students on free and reduced lunch that we have.

Your contributions will make it possible for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders in my resource program to have experiences that many of us have taken for granted. These young people, who have never been to a zoo, will have the opportunity to see animals that they have, at best, seen in pictures. They will get to manipulate materials and get a glimmer of the value of science in their lives. You will open up entirely new vistas for these children who have so little through your contribution to this grant.
