My Zen Zone is at the heart of my classroom community. I teach mindfulness to my students daily using the Little Spot books as well as using mindfulness cards to help them learn breathing techniques and other calming strategies. After I have done explicit training and helped my students to identify the appropriate times for use I then allow them to use the Zen Zone whenever they feel that they need it. I have seen some real growth in my student and how they handle upsetting situations.
My Zen Zone needs to be changed a little in order to encourage students to utilize it more often and effectively.
I believe that bean bags and a rug will be more inviting than a desk and chair with a cushion. The rug will help it feel more like a designated area for calming. In the past I have stored items that are used in the Zen Zone in the desk, on top of the desk in a bin, and in a chair pocket. The rolling cart will help me to keep items organized. The stickers will be great for positive affirmations. I will give them to students for their water bottles throughout the year.
