Our middle school is located in one of the oldest areas of our city. The west side of Columbus has a rich history that predates Columbus becoming the capital. Many of our students are unaware of the important nature of the history of their community. They have much to be proud of and yet our area does not often receive the recognition that it should. I want my students to begin to see the value of their community and recognize their important role in it.
Much like the area, teens and preteens can often be underestimated.
Underestimating my students would be a grave mistake as my students are capable of achieving anything that they want. They are powerful. They have a voice. They are the change we need in this world.
In addition to performing in our music program, my students are also active in other areas of school and our community. Our group, "We Are the Change" works to support our school and community through area cleanups, weekend food distribution, and amplifying the student voice.
My Project
Everyone loves getting a letter or postcard in the mail. It's a clear signal that someone is thinking about you and has taken the time to send a message to you. I am requesting forever and postcard stamps so that I can let my students know that they are important to me, that I miss them, and that I care.
Even as an adult, my own mom has kept the letters teachers sent to my brother and me, she has a special drawer in her dresser where she has kept all of them.
These notes help to form a bond between teachers and families that can only help to strengthen the student's potential for success because it is a united effort.
