My Project

In our self-contained elementary classroom, my students are learning far more than academics each day. Many of my students have autism and diverse learning needs, and we spend a large portion of our day building communication, independence, organization, and functional life skills that will help them become successful both inside and outside of school.

One of the biggest challenges in our classroom is creating systems that help students independently manage materials, routines, and transitions throughout the school day.

This literature organizer/mail sorter will become a central part of our classroom structure by giving each student an individualized mailbox space for papers, visual schedules, communication folders, completed work, and classroom materials. Having clearly defined spaces helps reduce confusion, anxiety, and overstimulation while promoting responsibility and independence.

For many students, simple routines like checking a mailbox, sorting papers, or delivering materials become opportunities to practice executive functioning, task completion, communication, and vocational-style skills. Students will use this organizer during morning routines, classroom jobs, transition times, and dismissal preparation. These consistent routines help build confidence and teach students how to independently navigate responsibilities in a structured environment.

This organizer will also help our classroom run more efficiently so students can spend less time overwhelmed by clutter and more time engaged in meaningful learning. With visual organization systems in place, students are better able to focus, self-manage, and participate successfully throughout the school day.
