Help me give my students a hands on experience learning about the heart (4 chambers and values) and the circulatory system.
"Because Science!" is often shouted out in my classroom. This is the standard phrase that the sixth graders came up with when they make a real world connection or think that something is amazing! I love to see the light in their eye as their passion for science is kindled!
Students here are curiosity seekers!
They have so many questions about the world around them that they want answered. My goal is to teach them where to go to find those answers and lead them to overarching science constructs that they can hang their learning on the rest of their lives! Hands on science exploration leads to applied math. Students begin to see the math/science connection and "why?" they are learning the math. Students exit my classroom as lifelong science students.
Many students in sixth grade are still developing their abstract thinking, yet they are supposed to learn about the parts of the heart, circulatory, and respiratory system. They can listen to each others' heart and lungs, but so many of my students are visual learners.
This lab will enable students to actually see and manipulate a sheep heart.
In groups of two, they can open/close the valves and view all 4 chambers of the heart. We dissected squid this year and the students were so respectful. They created detailed drawings and deep insights. The same will be true for hearts!
