Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Young people, particularly teenagers who are low-income, working class, who tend to be more marginalized in our society, don't have a voice. Putting the media in their hands is a way of helping them find a voice." - Steven Goodman, Founder of EVC Youth Media Program
Our school is located in an urban area and serves just under 900 students, most of whom come from a lower socioeconomic background.
We have zero Mac computers in our school, and therefore, I cannot teach them to edit video in such a way that will allow them to begin to establish their own voices. If given this opportunity, I am confident that my students will be inspired to think deeply and critically about issues of importance. I am certain that the work they create will reflect how smart and thoughtful they truly are.
My Project
Having a Macbook and hook-up microphone will enable us to analyze, and create, documentary work. We will read texts related to issues that plague low-income communities and discuss what we can do as advocates for change. This form of engagement ties into the idea that secondary literacy students must understand that reading is more than pronouncing words on a page correctly and fluently. Instead, they must believe that reading provides opportunities to discover and consider other ideas and perspectives that help shape their understanding of themselves and their world. Media creation will challenge them to develop their written and oral communication skills, as well as, enable them to project their individual identities.
Students will be engaging in a high level of critical thinking as they grapple with what issues they would like to explore further through the process of media creation. They will asked to do research, interview others, and formulate well-developed arguments.
The process of documentary making will help strengthen their reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills.
At the end of this process, I envision having a group of passionate learners who view literacy as an opportunity to better understand themselves and influence the world around them.
Should we receive the funding to obtain these two items, my students will be able to learn the skills necessary to create documentary films about issues they are passionate about.
