My students are all English Language Learners. The majority of them have moved from the Dominican Republic to Rhode Island. My school is a high-need school that is struggling to stay afloat. My kids are all working to learn English. We are doing a unit on personal narratives and I want to provide them with the opportunity to read a raw, well-written personal narrative. That way, we can begin to think about how to go about writing our own. I am also working toward helping my students to see how much our words can impact other people. Seeing as how English is their second language, I am hoping to show them how being an eloquent and fluent writer can help them gain respect and power in a community that does not always respect the opinions of minority youth.
