Youth Golfers in Physical Education

My students need golf equipment which includes a set of targets to chip balls at and youth size putters that are age appropriate and safe for children to use.

My Students

Golf is a lifetime activity that people of all ages play to stay; physically active and social. However, golf is an expensive recreational activity. I would like my diverse student population to experience this wonderful activity as part of their P.E. program.

My students range from the ages of five to eleven years old.

They attend school in a diverse, urban community where most students come from low-income families. The student population enjoys the school's physical education program. Over the years, we have continually tried to improve the program to satisfy their needs. My students have shown interest in activities involving short-handled and long-handled implements. Hockey, racquet sports, and golf are some of their favorite activities to play during physical education.

My Project

More and more children are living sedentary lifestyles in today's society. This is leading to unhealthy children that are not physically fit. This is part of the reason there has been such a rise in childhood obesity over the past decade. Teaching children lifetime activities in physical education class is important to help combat being sedentary. Students need to learn skills and knowledge related to lifetime activities in PE. Possessing these skills and knowledge helps an individual be physically active across a ones lifetime. Golf is a wonderful lifetime activity. With my project being funded, the physical education program will be able to have golf skills as part of its hitting with handled implements unit. Students will use the requested targets and putters to learn how to putt and strike a golf ball correctly. Students will also learn the rules of the game and become knowledgable golfers in terms of vocabulary, strategy, and scoring. This would be a fantastic introduction to young golfers in my school.

I hope to further spark student interest in golf.

Golf is a recreational activity that they can play throughout their lifetimes to stay physically active. Over the past year, I have found old golf clubs and bought some at garage sales because golf equipment is very expensive in P.E. catalogs. I have modified the clubs to fit my students specifications. Support this project so I can possess safer, lighter, youth friendly golf equipment that can be used for years to come in my P.E. program.
