Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students would benefit from these resources to improve their ability to communicate their wants, needs, and desires despite their diagnosis of a speech and/or language impairment. Some of my students are completely non-verbal while some have significant speech or language impairments affecting their ability to communicate with peers and family. In spite of their diagnosis, they always come to the speech room with a smile on their face.
I work in an urban, low-income community school where our school is 100% free breakfast and lunch.
Despite most of students coming from low-income households, they love and have the desire to learn and want to be the best that they can be. It is my job as a speech language pathologist to help them accomplish that goal.
My desire is to provide manipulates that will promote kinesthetic learning to address their specific speech and language goals. Kinesthetic learning can positively impact a student's cognitive, social, and emotional development. Additionally, kinesthetic learning can aid in the brain's capacity to retain information. For example, student's who are working on their "s" speech sound will benefit from objects that will target that sound. Additionally, students can utilize manipulatives to expand their vocabulary size by identifying, describing, and/or requesting objects.
This is my third year as a speech language pathologist working in the schools. I am specifically working in a low income school. I am missing vital resources that I need for my students to address their goals as directed on the Individualized Education Program (IEP). Many of my students present with significant speech and language impairments, and I do not have enough materials for all of my students to provide opportunities for communication. With your donation, I would use the Alphabet Sounds Teaching Tubs to help me achieve this goal.
