Your Chance to be an Athletic Supporter! Shall We Dance?

My students need 25 copies of "Appreciating Dance: A Guide to the World's Liveliest Art" for a new beginning dance class at my independent study high school.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

So you think you can dance? Well, I have 25 students who think they can. They are ready to be the first students to break in our new dance studio. In order to provide curriculum that meets California standards in Visual and Performing Arts, we need books.

Our students are 9-12 graders who need the arts.

Many of our students have faced tough times early in life and need individualized education to help them succeed. Several of our students choose our school so that they can work at their own pace and graduate from high school a year earlier than they would at a traditional school. Our students are driven. Many of them are 18 and are not required by law to go to school, but they see value in earning a diploma and will work hard to get it. The mission of our school is to engage students who are no longer a part of the traditional high school setting. We work with our approximately 2,000 students to develop personalized learning plans that enable each student to move toward graduation. We support students in mastering basic skills utilizing technology and help them develop an interest in lifelong learning. Our school is continuously developing new programs that support this mission statement--and our new dance class is one of these programs.

My Project

Appreciating Dance: A Guide to the World's Liveliest Art" is an amazing book for students who are just getting their feet wet with dance. The book includes brief biographies of many notable dancers and choreographers, a history of dance and even a chapter on dance in the new millennium. It features an overview of social dance, ballet, modern dance, tap, jazz, film and theatrical dance, and contemporary dance, and includes discussion questions for all of the chapters. Adding to its usefulness, the book features lists of videos and Internet sites where students can find more information on their own. This beautifully illustrated book not only inspires dancers with dance appreciation but opens their eyes to careers in dance and the arts in general. I know that this book will add to the overall dance experience for my students and give them a wealth of knowledge about the arts and themselves. We will use these books for many years to come.

My school was able to find money to create a studio to house music, martial arts and dance classes before the California budget crisis hit education hard.

The studio has been sitting empty for months. Students at our school have been involved with fund raisers to help us raise money for the mirrors in the dance room. The last piece of the puzzle is finding the funds for our books. This is where you can help. Help students experience dance and develop a lifelong love of the arts.
