Young Mathematicians At Work: Headphones Needed!

My students need 24 headphones to be able to utilize the math intervention program DreamBox in their first grade classroom.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Imagine being a first grader struggling in math. Then imagine a computer based intervention program that could help you reach your goals! It's called DreamBox, and our first graders have access to it. The problem is, we need headphones to be able to hear the interactive instruction and games!

We are adorable Delaware first graders who are eager to become better mathematicians.

Many of us have special learning needs in our class. We attend a title one school where 68% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Many of us are struggling to keep up with the rigorous curriculum. In addition to our core instruction, we now have access to DreamBox Learning - an online elementary math program that raises student performance and confidence. We are engaged and love math. From the second we log on we are hooked. At the current moment, we have to borrow headphones from the other first grade classrooms in order to ensure each of us has access to the program. With your funding we would have the ability for students to keep their headphones in a secure, labeled individual bag, in a box in the classroom.

My Project

DreamBox combines engaging, adaptive lessons with the real-time reporting educators need to individualize instruction. It motivates our students in a way no other program does! It is adaptive and engineered to accelerate student learning. DreamBox tailors every math lesson to meet a student's unique math need. It aligns with the Common Core State Standards as well as our classroom Investigations Curriculum. It also provides the teacher with comprehensive reporting tools that track student proficiency and progress. Dreambox can adapt the level of difficulty, scaffolding, sequencing, and the number of hints, the pacing, all in real-time allowing students of all levels to progress at a pace that suits them. In addition, students show their work with unique virtual manipulatives, encouraging them to explain, discuss, and defend their mathematical thinking.

Every day they pass me in the hallway asking when they can log on. With a class set of headphones they will all have equal access to this extraordinary tool!
