Young, Inspiring Writers and Place-Based Philosophy
Help me give my students writing resources, encouraging the young inspirational writers that they are! We are learning about native animal species, identifying some on campus (e.g. Kolea bird), and writing books!
I teach third grade SPED. We are learning about the importance of Native Hawaiian animal species, including those that are endangered. Students are also making connections to the learning experiences that occur within the 4 walls of our classroom to the learning experiences that occur at home and outside of school. For example, one student reported a Hawaiian Monk Seal they noticed at a nearby beach. Another is always happy to point out native bird species they see on campus, especially the Kolea.
Students are excited to demonstrate the knowledge they have learned about Native Hawaiian Animals by creating their very own books!
More importantly, they are proud to share their work with their families and friends.
These resources (e.g. blank books, special markers, etc.) will be used to write and illustrate their books. The other books and resources (e.g. Reef Fish Guides) will be used to enhance their knowledge of a variety of Hawaiian animals while using visuals.
