"The important thing is to never stop questioning" stated Albert Einstein. I challenge my students everyday to enter the Science Lab questioning what they are learning. This mindset helps enrich the hands-on learning that takes place in my classroom.
Nestled in a close-knit community, my school is full of eager young minds yearning to learn.
As the school's Science Teacher, I have the privilege of teaching third through sixth graders every week in hands-on Science. Every week students enter the lab with enthusiasm and anticipation. While my school is fortunate to experience weekly Science, the budget for this position is meager. Whether we're learning about magnetism and electricity or dissecting a sheep's heart, there is never a day without hands-on learning and experimenting!
My Project
Every year fifth grade students learn an introductory chemistry unit. This is always a highlight of the year. As a culminating project, titled Mystery Powders, students are given eight mystery powders to investigate the different chemical properties. Students use their own micro plates throughout the four week lab culminating project which requires many plates for multiple classes. Students newly acquired knowledge of chemical properties, the periodic table, and chemical bonds is put to the test!!
Both the microplates and the pH indicator strips will be crucial to the Mystery Powders labs.
Students will use these supplies to discover the properties of each powder. They will use their findings and other lab skills to discover the contents of the mixed vial of powders. Not only will it help them learn important life skills in this lab, but these same supplies can be used for other important chemistry labs for many years.
