This project funded my enrollment in Stanford's National Board Resource Center's Candidate Support Program. My enrollment in this program gained me access to National Board Certified Teacher cohort facilitators and a cohort of educators working toward the same goal (get National Board Certification in Generalist: Early Childhood). \r\n\r\nGoing through the process of becoming National Board Certified is an extremely reflective experience that encourages and requires intentional teaching practices. Being part of Stanford's program has given me access to a community of likeminded educators committed to being the best educators they can be for their students. \r\n\r\nOne aspect of getting certified requires me to submit videos of me teaching. For one, I facilitate a small group focused on solving math word problems. I used my Knowledge of Students to intentionally write problems with things I know each student is interested (ex: writing a soccer word problem for a student that really likes soccer to connect to and get excited about). For one word problem, I had a student exclaim \"BASKETBALL, THANK YOU!\" when they read a word problem I wrote for them. \r\n\r\nIn the coming weeks I am going to teach some science lessons. I am excited for these lessons as I focus on multiple modes of thinking/sharing: independently on whiteboard, turn and talk to a partner, and in a group of 2-3 for a picture walk. \r\n\r\nYour donations have given me access to a community that will support me in improving my skills as an educator and clarify my understanding of what each Component requires- in hopes that I certify the first time around.","fullyFundedDate":1760725712556,"projectUrl":"project/go-for-the-gold-support-team/9627662/","projectTitle":"Go for the Gold: Support Team","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kiernan","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7513295_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y594&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755644438462","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7513295"},{"teacherId":7513295,"projectId":9626354,"letterContent":"I've seen the words \"National Board Certification\" for years, but never knew what it meant or what being certified required. Last year, a teacher at my elementary school found out she passed and earned the recognition of being a National Board Certified Teacher. This school year, we had a few teachers transfer school sites or districts and join my school. Thanks to teacher introductions, I found out that one teacher new to our school is also a National Board Certified Teacher. Now it really caught my attention! Two teachers at my school site have this certification, but what is it? With my curiosity peaked, I started researching what it is, why teachers do it, and what it requires. I learned that National Board Certification is known as the \"gold standard in teacher certification\" (National Board for Professional Teaching Standards) and it has been found that Board Certified Teachers have an even higher positive impact on student learning than non-Board Certified Teachers (NBPTS). That sold me on beginning my National Board Certification journey. Since finishing graduate school, I have continued to seek professional development opportunities and taken time to learn from my peers through observation and feedback. I want to ensure that I am the best educator I can be for my students and I discovered and decided that earning National Board Certification is my next way to level up my skills as an educator. \r\n\r\nGetting National Board Certified is a large time and financial commitment. On top of this, unlike most candidates that spread the certification process over multiple years, I have committed myself to completing all four components this 2025-2026 School Year. Thanks to your generous donations, the financial aspect of the process has been alleviated from my plate. Now I can spend my time and energy on the professional growth this certification process entails. \r\n\r\nRegistering for National Board Certification through National Board for Professional Teaching Standards meant I was able to specify my Specialization on the NBPTS portal. Regarding the four components, my current plans are to begin Component 4 (Effective and Reflective Practitioner), then 2 (Differentiation in Instruction), then 3 (Teaching Practice and Learning Environment). Component 1 (Content Knowledge), an assessment taken through Pearson Testing Centers, will be available for me to take at the end of the school year. I have a busy year ahead, but it will be so worth it! So far, I have started developing my Knowledge of Students (Component 4) by having impromptu interviews with students asking about their friends in class, something they want to learn this school year, and their favorite and least favorite subjects. Getting to know my students on an individual level is the foundation of being successful as it will allow me to better connect with and support each student. \r\n\r\nI am most eager to grow in my ability to differentiate instruction, both for those that need extra support and for those that are ready for more. \r\n\r\nAs my school district says, all students are all our students. As a result of the professional growth I will experience from this process, I will not only be able to better support my students, but I'll also bring more to the table in my professional learning communities. Thank you for your generosity. Please know that this professional development will not only allow me to better support students, but will allow me to better support my co-workers too. I am so grateful!","fullyFundedDate":1757513678982,"projectUrl":"project/go-for-the-gold-national-board-certific/9626354/","projectTitle":"Go for the Gold: National Board Certification","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kiernan","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7513295_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y594&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755644438462","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7513295"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_92187","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":338,"numTeachers":17,"percentFrplEligible":16,"percentAsian":5,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":68,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":11,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"19.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":90.0,"schoolId":92187,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Harbor View Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Harbor View Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/newport-mesa-unified-school-district/harbor-view-elementary-school/92187"}
