My Students

As a teacher in a title one school in Alaska, I see students being faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite these challenges, my goal is to keep the classroom atmosphere positive and inspired, and to provide students with meaningful learning experiences.

My students are creative, motivated, and love to learn.

They like to read, write, and draw about their lives and interests. They love positive attention. Many of them receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Some of the students may not have the experiences in life that others enjoy. All of my students are remarkable individuals.

When the children walk in the door of my classroom, they are met with a handshake, a smile, and a positive comment to welcome them to a fantastic day of school. I focus on their potential, interests, and growth. Every one of them wants to learn, and I can help facilitate the best day of learning possible.

My Project

I am so excited about this project! Many years ago I took a Zentangle drawing class (repeated patterns drawn in black ink), and have been creating projects with my students ever since. This summer I took a second class at the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival and was inspired to make these projects even more amazing.

My students' imaginative enthusiasm for art is boundless.

When we work on the Zentangle designs, I am impressed by the concentration, effort, relaxation, and attentive silence in the classroom. Students love to draw these beautiful repeated patterns, even those who do not consider themselves artists.

My goal this year is to not only provide instruction in this wonderful art form but to have the quality supplies available, like Sakura Pigma Micron Pens, shading tools, and special paper artist's tiles. This will enable students to draw more detailed, intricate, and shaded designs, as well as to work individually as artists, encourage others, and celebrate our final pieces. If you have not seen student Zentangle artwork, I cannot wait to send you photos of this completed project - you will be amazed!
