Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world." When Albert Einstein said those words, he had no way of knowing I would be using them to guide my high school visual arts classes in 2022.

Embracing imagination and creativity to solve problems is the most important skill I can teach my students.

My students range from 9th to 12th graders, and all of them benefit from exploring the range of their imaginations--and realizing their creativity can empower them. I teach visual arts classes, but often my students’ creative learning extends well outside the walls of the classroom. My students work on public art projects, participate in monthly craft fairs at our school, and find ways to share their art across our district and across our state. All students need opportunity, materials, and technological support to develop their professional, creative ambitions. Additionally, they benefit from realizing how their creativity can lead to entrepreneurism and the development of workforce skills.

My Project

Many of my art students have become obsessed with stickers. They put them on their water bottles, on their cars, and basically anywhere they can. Recently, we started a monthly craft fair that teaches students entrepreneurial skills and allows them to make real income from their art. At these "art marts," many of the students make and sell custom stickers; however, they must find an online sticker company to produce the stickers for them. With that in mind, I want to create a work station in my classroom, where students can avoid the high expenses of custom sticker companies. Students will develop design and problem solving skills in our creative community. With that support, they will be able to make not only stickers, but also custom shirts, hats, mugs, and anything else we can think up to design in class, increasing entrepreneurial capacity, workforce skills, and their powers of creative expression.
