My students come from extremely diverse backgrounds. There are students who have fled war-torn countries such as the Ukraine, Russia and Israel to first generation Mexican-Americans, to students dealing with Asperger's, a myriad of learning disabilities and even a student who is in the advanced stages of Muscular Dystrophy. Through all their struggles and anxiety, they are extremely resilient and come to school every day with hopes of a better future. Many are new to reading. Often they'll tell me they haven't read a complete book since they were in elementary school.
I am a voracious reader of young adult novels, and I am almost always able to find books for even the most reluctant reader. Former students who used to hate books are constantly coming to me for recommendations and to borrow books. Through this donation for books that my students love, I hope to continue to be a resource to students who are waiting for the right book that speaks to them and makes them see that reading (instead of being just another boring activity that is a necessary skill for the job market) provides a universal experience and helps us to understand more about humanity and the human condition. Books like "Luna" and "Will Grayson, Will Grayson" accomplish this goal.
