Your support brought a powerful text into our classroom, one that encouraged students to slow down, think deeply, and talk honestly about their own experiences. The book helped them practice close reading and discussion skills, but more importantly, it opened space for real reflection.\r\n\r\nReading in our room felt more like a conversation than an assignment. Students annotate, shared what stood out to them, and reacted to one another's ideas. Coates' voice made them feel safe bringing their own stories into the room, and our discussions often took us beyond the page in thoughtful, meaningful ways.\r\nSeveral students connected with this book in personal ways. \r\n\r\nMy Latino and Mexican immigrant students related to Coates' ideas about navigating America while carrying the weight of family history and expectation. Students from Ukraine, some of whom have experienced displacement or sudden change, recognized the importance of holding on to identity during difficult times. Black students felt seen in the way Coates articulated experiences that often go unspoken in school texts. Even students who were unsure at first found themselves highlighting passages and sharing insights that were personal and meaningful. Your support did more than place books in their hands. It created opportunities for empathy, self reflection, and academic growth that will stay with them long after this class ends.\r\n\r\nThis unit also gave my students the chance to write their own narratives, and many of them chose to be deeply honest about the experiences that shaped the way they view power, identity, safety, and/or justice. The space created by our reading allowed them to feel safe enough to share moments they had never voiced in a classroom before. Some wrote about family histories or cultural expectations, while others reflected on challenges they have faced in their neighborhoods or in their journeys to the United States. Their willingness to be vulnerable showed just how much the text opened the door for meaningful self‑reflection, and the narratives became some of the most powerful pieces of writing they have produced all year.\r\n\r\nYour generosity helped create moments they will carry with them long after the year ends.\r\n\r\nThank you for making that possible.","fullyFundedDate":1759512984624,"projectUrl":"project/between-the-world-and-us-using-language/9547512/","projectTitle":"Between the World and Us: Using Language to Empower Ourselves","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Quiroga","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10159044"},{"teacherId":9547053,"projectId":9173278,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generosity!
