What if students could learn about history by reading short informational books written in a silly, quirky style? Textbooks can be dry and boring, but the study of history should be exciting!
I teach fifty-five 4th grade students from fifteen area schools who have been identified as gifted.
There is no funding for gifted education in Alabama. Our state education systems have been tremendously hurt by the economic turndown and the oil spill in the gulf. Any materials we get are purchased from our own pocket, thus no books, no equipment, and no materials.
My project is called "You Wouldn't Want to be....." Students will travel back in time through a concept-based curriculum unit on the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece, Rome and others. Students will look through these civilizations through the conceptual lenses of culture, conflict, and identify. The "You Wouldn't Want to be" series is excellent as a means to motivate reluctant readers. Even gifted students can be reluctant to read non-fiction. The vibrant, funny illustrations and the bite-sized chunks of text are less intimidating than standard texts containing the same information. Boys especially seem to enjoy the humor and at times disgusting and gory historical factoids. Students who understand the customs and beliefs of a particular culture and time, are more likely to understand events that unfold in that time.
Can you imagine a group of fourth graders talking about ancient history as if they are college scholars?
Students may even discover historical inaccuracies in the fiction books they read. If you choose to support my project, you will make this a reality in the lives of my students. By funding this project, you will make it possible for my students to have a resource that would not normally be available to them.
