My students need supplies to study forensic entomology. This biorama will show students which insects to look for and what the insects do. The sieve set, vials, alcohol, and sampler will help students research.
I have amazing students that would really benefit from hands-on experience in their science classes. They have expressed their interest in science and so many of them want to do well and set themselves up for a good life! As an underrepresented population, a strong background in the STEM subjects will be beneficial.
Some of my students are homeless and a number of them have lost a parent just this year.
I want to make sure school is a place that they feel safe and supported.
My Project
My forensic science students are learning about forensic entomology. This unit gets students outside, out of the classroom, and their cell phones, to dig in the dirt. They are learning about insects and their role in decomposition.
This biorama and collection supplies will be instrumental in providing my forensic science students with the proper tools to perform their own field research and locate insects.
They will be able to get hands-on experience collecting insects at various stages of decomposition. Students will then be expected to classify their insects and research their contribution to the environment and decomposition.
Since insects are the most numerous living thing on earth it is imperative that students learn about them and their importance to our environment and their lives.
