My Students

The heart of my classroom is my students. I am a Certified Reading Specialist and ESL Teacher who works with language learners who are new to the country or second-generation immigrants. I work with kindergarten-second grade students needing literacy intervention and enrichment services as the K-2 Library Interventionist.

My talented & smart students in grades K-2 speak several languages and represent diversity in our country.

They are lively and have the kindest of hearts. As an early elementary teacher, I am one of the first people to introduce to my students the importance of reading and writing.

They speak English, Spanish, Arabic, Swahili, Nubu, Portuguese, German, and Chinese. Some of my students traveled on foot with their parents from different regions in Central America in order to attend school in the United States. They are seen in 45 minute-1 hour groups during the pull-out intervention and enrichment blocks for RTI and ESL classes. They love learning to read, engaging in STEAM activities, and showing their creativity like the famous artists that we study. My goal is to change the way my students feel about learning and show them how to be amazing readers, writers, scientists, and mathematicians.

My Project

Through the help of DonorsChoose and its generous partners, I have been able to provide my students with engaging and hands-on learning opportunities. These opportunities helped lead to a new position for me in the coming school year. I will be my district's first Library Interventionist getting to work with every student in my building, including Enrichment Students in kindergarten and first grade, kindergarten ESL students, and students with diverse learning needs.

The professional development books in this project will help me gain a better understanding of different job functions of the librarian and literacy learning opportunities that I should be providing my students.

It is my hope that I will be able to provide my students with a Makerspace in the library and play-based literacy opportunities they deserve as young learners. The texts in this project should help me develop a better understanding of ways to make this happen.
