My students need drawing paper, markers, crayons and pencils to creatively participate in the development of literacy skills.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember what it was like when you received your first letter in the mail or when you sent out your first letter to a friend? My students have not yet discovered this joy and excitement!
"Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire"
William Butler Yeats
My students are English language learners and the majority come from low socio-economic homes and/or homes with parents who may not be literate.
To add to this, many of my students come from broken homes with unstable living conditions. While I find that most of my students come in with some disadvantages, there are things they still have in common with other children: they are curious, inquisitive, they have a thirst for knowledge, they want a fair chance in our educational system.
So how can I as a teacher, distract them from their sadness and offer them a peek at joy and opportunities to learn and grow?
Unfortunately, financial hardships have hit our district and I find that my classroom budget keeps suffering. I am not able to buy some of the basic materials that I used to buy abundantly only a few years ago.
My Project
I'm requesting a classroom mailbox, drawing paper, pencils, crayons and markers. With these resources, my students will have an opportunity to write to their peers, teachers or parents in an authentic manner. In the process, students will be improving their literacy skills in a fun way.
I'll create a learning center where my only objective would be that students are actively engaged in writing, drawing and mailing a letter, a list, a note to anyone that's important to them.
I want my students to feel the joy one feels when we receive an unexpected piece of mail, a get well card, a "just thinking of you" card, etc.
As a kindergarten teacher, I continuously see the challenges English language learners face on a daily basis.
With the lack of support and engagement at home, I struggle to find new ways to light a fire in my students learning. At the closing of last years academic year I secured funding for a literacy project where students created their own books. What joy it brought to their faces to be able to share there creations with their peers but most importantly with their families. Please help!
