My students are English language learners and the majority come from low socio-economic homes and/or homes with parents who may not be literate. To add to this, many of my students come from broken homes with unstable living conditions. While I find that most of my students come in with some disadvantages, there are things they still have in common with other children: they are curious, inquisitive, they have a thirst for knowledge, they want a fair chance in our educational system. So how can I as a teacher, distract them from their sadness and offer them a peek at joy and opportunities to learn and grow? Unfortunately, financial hardships have hit our district and I find that my classroom budget keeps suffering. I am not able to buy some of the basic materials that I used to buy abundantly only a few years ago.
