Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a small, community-based Title I school in East Oakland. Students are primarily from low-income immigrant families and are highly motivated to achieve.

All of my students are recently arrived immigrants - they arrived to the United States in the last 1-3 years from Guatemala, El Salvador, Yemen, Honduras, and Mexico.

Many have limited schooling and literacy in their native language. Many have been separated from their parents or the family members who raised them for long periods of time. Their immigration stories are all different. They are 6th-8th graders reading English at a 1st-3rd grade reading level. Many cannot read in their native language and are learning to read for the first time in their second, or often, third language. They are all highly motivated to read, but many lack access to high quality books in English, as well as people who can read these books with them.

My Project

All of these books were chosen to support students in becoming confident, joyful, critical, and habitual readers. They were all based on student requests, either for specific characters (Elephant and Piggie, Biscuit, Ballet Cat), authors (Mo Willems, Dav Pilkey) and subjects (animals, unicorns, ecology, humor, superheroes). They will all encourage students in their continued discovery of new characters, series, cultures, and genres.

My students desperately want to become better readers, and they deserve to have engaging books that they can read independently and that are based on their interests.

The books they can read are very short, and they go through them very quickly. These books will allow my students to once again have books that they can both look forward to reading and tackle successfully on their own.
