Who are we proud to be?! A-KI-LI Academy! I am a 1st grade teacher at Akili Academy, a first year charter school. Our students all qualify for free lunch, and thus are considered high-need and at risk.

My students come to me, on average, two years below grade level. Most of them are learning to read all year while being required to master various reading comprehension standards. This has been quite a struggle since it's difficult to dissect and really get into a story that is such a challenge to even read. Our classroom is really lacking a lot of the books that my kids have shown interest in. I know that if they are surrounded with titles they love like the ones I've requested, they'll be more eager and confident about using them to better their reading comprehension strategies.

I need copies of books they LOVE! They really enjoy reading different series of books because they get to know the characters and enjoy reading more about them. Also, the books I've selected work really well at targeting skills like cause and effect, main idea, character change, character feeling, setting, problem/solution, etc. while also being really interesting and fun stories for them to listen to and read.

Your help will make it possible for my kids to have access to books they love, and for our class to have access to books that hone in on certain skills they need to master to be on grade level by the end of 1st grade.
