Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach general music in a school where all of the students receive free breakfast and free lunch. Most of my students come from a low-income, high-poverty community thus many creative outlets these students need are unavailable. As such, I strive to provide a safe, welcoming, learning environment in my music class. I want to give my students opportunities to explore, learn, create, and grow through music. The smiles I see when my students are having fun making music is priceless.
Students at our school believe that music prepares the brain for achievement, fosters superior working memory and cultivates better thinking skills.
We believe that by exposing our students to a successful music and arts program, they become well rounded and have a higher chance for success in the regular classroom.
My Project
Movement and folk dance is an essential part of the music curriculum. It is not enough to be a tuneful musician. Becoming physically literate individuals is also important.
In order to accomplish this I strive to incorporate folk dancing, circle games, and movement into every music class, no matter the age of the student.
The materials requested will help to enhance the movement experiences of the students. The stretchy bands will help with the circle games, keeping the students in a circle and helping to move as a unit as opposed to several individuals. The parachutes will be used for beat activities. Moving to a steady beat, showing melodic kine through movement, and teaching students to work with others whom they may not have picked originally. Finally, the hoops will be used with the primary grades to work on boundary development and center work.
