You Can't Say Pwned in Book Club!

My students need 10 copies of 3 book titles: "Dragon Rider" by Cornelia Funke, "Abarat" by Clive Barker, and "Anthem" by Ayn Rand.

I teach 80 rough and tumble 8th graders science. After school a fellow teacher and I play host to 10 students in a book club.

When several students approached us about an after school book club, we couldn't say no. At our school, clubs are limited to sports and student council. The choir and drama club are off limits to upper level kids, and the media club ended early due to budget cuts. Our group is a mix of kids who don't really fit in any of those groups, and who wanted an outlet for those who were like minded. Our book room with class sets is limited, especially for our group of advanced readers. We have already tackled Cornelia Funkes "Thief Lord" and are currently reading "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", but our book room didn't have enough copies, and our students are taking turns nightly passing back and forth copies to get caught up.

We need 10 copies of our top 3 on our "must read" book list. The students requested another Cornelia Funke book, Dragon Rider, a sci-fi thriller, Ababrat, and a book to get our students ready for high school and to instill in our students a sense of self, Anthem, by Ayn Rand. We feel like these students are often overlooked in many other arenas on campus, and want an outlet to be able to discuss literature in an inviting environment.

We feel this push at the end of the year will help spur them on as high school placement tests approach and determine if they will be in honors English classes next year.
