Varnville Elementary is a rural school, with a little over 450 students. I am the new media specialist and have found VES to be a reading school. Students have done an exceptional job increasing their reading skills along with state test scores. The importance of reading has been stressed from PreK through 4th grade at VES. There are baskets and piles of paperback books placed throughout the school in hopes that a child will pick one up and read instead of misbehaving. The love of literature is evident. I would like to see students enjoying more reading by having more and newer books in the library. Over 2,000 books have been weeded from the collection this year, because of age or condition, with many more that could join their ranks! We have the reading program "Reading Counts". It is a program that tests comprehension after reading a book. Students earn points and can get incentives. It depends on how devoted the school is to the program as to the level of participation and rewards. We deperately need books that are in the reading list. The reading program was introduced several years ago but has since gone by the wayside. This might be just the type of incentive that reluctant readers need to boost their interest in reading. It will not be so much a competition between students, but a competition within each student to see how many books they can read each year. Research has shown that by itself a reading program such as Reading Counts does not increase reading skill, but used as a tool in a defined reading program it has shown great results for increasing reading skills and inspired an interest in reading.
