Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I can remember many evenings and summer days when I was growing up playing board games with my friends and family. These experiences provided me with math readiness skills as well as the opportunity to practice sharing, turn taking, and working cooperatively.

The children at our school come eager and ready to learn.

They are from economically very poor home situations but, for the most part, are from caring environments. Many live with grandparents or other extended family members and most have several siblings. As a result, finances are meager and time spent one-on-one with an adult is very limited. Many students around the US come to kindergarten or first grade with a knowledge of colors, letters, position, and quantity based on early social interactions within the family. However the first exposure to these concepts for most of our children comes when they walk into school. The teachers at our school do a wonderful job of presenting these important concepts within classroom instruction but additional reinforcement in a fun atmosphere would be so beneficial to the students.

My Project

Can you imagine the look on a child's face when they are told they can bring their breakfast or lunch to the Math Playground and have some time to play a board game with friends? Dalmatian puppies, Eric Carle characters, entertaining pictures - all these are part of the games that have been selected for the Math Playground. For a teacher nothing beats knowing that your students are having fun and learning at the same time. But, the learning is not just academic. When a child has to take turns, share game pieces, ask for help with what to do next, give that help in a constructive and kind manner there is so much more learning that takes place.

Getting a firm foundation in mathematics vocabulary and thinking processes is essential to success in school.

Learning how to get along with others is essential to success in life. I know that coming to the Math Playground will promote success for our students in school and throughout their life. Won't you join me in opening the Math Playground?
