The classroom is filled with a diverse and inquisitive group of of 4th and 5th grade students. Being a part of the second largest city in Minnesota, the students who make up my classroom represent the diversity of the city. My students walk into my classroom knowing that this is a family. While we may come from different places, speak different languages, and eat different foods, we all learn together.
We take pride in our differences in culture and learn from each other.
Asking questions and seeking the answers for our wondering is what being a student in the Montessori classroom is all about. We treasure finding the answers through doing hands on learning, reading, and researching.
My Project
Reading is a gateway to anywhere in the world...or outside for that matter. The current classroom library is poorly stocked and in need of a makeover, especially with books that represent the students who read them.
Sharing a connection to the book a child is reading encourages them to continue reading.
Having books that my students can see themselves in will encourage them to read and learn. While several of my students are reluctant readers, the few diverse books that we have are usually the ones the students read the most. I want to provide every child in my class to feel represented in the books we read.
