I believe that it is vitally important to educate our students about eating healthy. With a variety of books and other materials, students can begin to research the reasons why eating healthy and engaging in physical activity is important to their development.
I am a literacy coach in a rural school district.
I travel to four schools. Most of my interaction with students is at the primary(1-3) grade level. These schools are title one schools with a high poverty level. Introducing the food pyramid, healthy eating habits, information about our bodies, how they work, and ideas about exercising is critical to getting students on the right path to a healthy life style. The picture books are user friendly and contain lots of information at the appropriate level for primary students.
My Project
One of the units that our second grade students engage in is about taking care of ourselves. Although the teachers have some resources for this unit, since it is fairly new, there are gaps in the materials available. It would be very helpful to have the additional resources to share among the teachers when I work with them. As we work through this unit, the extra reading material will allow the students to become researchers and learners. With a variety of texts to distribute in the classroom, students can work in small groups sharing ideas while taking notes. As each small group finishes a text, they can exchange with another group. The end results would be to have the students write an informational essay on healthy habits using the information from their notes.
According to all the numbers, our nation is growing more obese each year.
Many of our young children are already exhibiting signs of being overweight.
Introducing ideas about healthy choices and exercise through our classroom lessons will start the life long process of learning about good nutrition, exercise, and healthy habits.
