I teach freshman students at Odessa High School I love that my health and PE students put forth a great effort each day, despite our circumstances, to do their best. My students are actively engaged each day and are eager to learn. I know that this project will benefit them not only physically, but will give them tools to improve their mental and emotional well-being. We plan on using the yoga/exercise mats to learn yoga poses and routines each day and hopefully students will feel comfortable practicing these techniques outside of school.
My Project
Our students have struggled over the past several months with their mental, physical, and emotional health. Due to COVID, we are limited in the units we can do in class due to equipment restrictions and distancing. As a department, we've decided that yoga would be a great unit and daily part of class to help our students in a socially distanced fashion.
Therefore, I'm requesting yoga mats so that students can learn yoga poses and techniques that help stretch, focus, and calm themselves amidst everything happening in the world.
The mats will allow them to have their own space on the floor that is socially distanced from the rest of the class. I would love for this to be a main part of each class. I'm hopeful that they can learn new techniques each class that they will use outside of the classroom as well.
I look forward to teaching students yoga as a regular part of our PE curriculum. This project will go on to serve hundreds of students over time as they go through our PE class. My hope is that the chance to learn yoga in PE will give them the confidence to try it outside of school when they are feeling stressed. This also gives all students the opportunity to increase flexibility, which decreases the risk of injury.
