Students see how reading and writing became acts of liberation and how language was used as a tool to challenge dehumanization. Harriet Jacobs's \"Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl\" offers a perspective that is often absent from traditional historical accounts: the experience of enslaved women. Through Jacobs's narrative, students confront the intersections of slavery, gender, family, and sexual exploitation.\r\n\r\nEngaging with these first-person accounts encourages students to think critically about whose voices are represented in historical narratives and whose have been marginalized or silenced. The emotional power of these narratives often sparks meaningful discussion, reflection, and a stronger personal connection to the material.\r\n\r\nUltimately, reading Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs affirm the importance of storytelling as both a record of the past and a catalyst for change, empowering students to better understand the legacy of slavery and the enduring importance of justice, education, and the human voice.","fullyFundedDate":1760789118485,"projectUrl":"project/pages-of-power-amplifying-black-voices/9829696/","projectTitle":"Pages of Power: Amplifying Black Voices in Lit Circles","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Wlock","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1111216_orig.png?crop=161,161,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1760551042604","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1111216"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_127355","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":965,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":13,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":35,"percentWhite":48,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":7,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":66.7,"schoolId":127355,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Odessa High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Odessa High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/delaware/appoquinimink-school-district/odessa-high-school/127355"}
