Help me give my students the opportunity to learn and practice yoga on a regular basis. Studies show that practicing yoga supports students ability to develop mindful awareness in their daily activities and lowers discipline referrals.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds within the neighborhoods of Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan, Roslindale and West Roxbury. They represent different cultures and languages ranging from Somalian and Ethiopian to Dominican, Puerto Rican and those born and raised in the United States of America.
My students work hard in school, but need extra support with reading and writing.
Testing shows that our students do well with their reading levels up to 3rd grade. However, in 3rd grade they start to struggle with their reading levels and do not show their best work on the standardized testing.
My Project
With the use of yoga mats, I will be able to teach my 200 Kindergarten to 7th grade students how to incorporate mindful awareness into their physical bodies. I will teach my students how to practice mindfulness both on and off the yoga mat.
Practicing yoga in schools has been proven to lower office discipline referrals and to increase academic focus in the classroom.
My students are already learning about mindfulness as a breathing and awareness practice.
Now they will be able to learn about about mindfulness through practicing yoga on a weekly basis. They will also be able to bring their yoga practice into other parts of their lives, as well.
