This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As students who live in the center of the city, the kids in our class will be coming with a wide array of experiences and backgrounds. Each student brings with them their own family culture creating a diverse environment where learning extends past the academics. In our classroom, the two teachers who work with these students encourage a challenging and engaging experience for students every single day.
As two first year teachers, we are very excited to create a classroom where students feel safe, welcomed, and challenged.
My Project
There is no question that children can derive tremendous benefits from the regular practice of yoga. I would like to incorporate a safe way for our students to practice yoga into our classroom. To do this, each student needs access to a proper mat to ensure effective and safe practice. We will also use our mats to practice and learn outside when possible, giving the students a comfortable place to work outside of the walls of the classroom.
When children practice yoga, they are practicing unifying the mind and body.
This will help with concentration, mindfulness, and self-awareness - all skills kids need to be productive students and, more importantly, members of a community. We have also included books about yoga to promote literacy in our practice.
