My Students

My goal as a physical education teacher is to help students develop a passion for life-long fitness. I want to help students improve their physical health but also support their social-emotional health and empower them to be their own health advocates. We are a Title I school located in Texas. Our school population is just under 1,300, and we see approximately 500 5th- and 6th-grade students each day in all our classes. A large portion of our student population comes from low socioeconomic households and has little to no experience with health and physical activities outside our classes.

My Project

Students will use yoga mats during after-school yoga club. Many of our students want to be involved in extracurricular activities and have expressed special interest in practicing yoga. Yoga mats help provide a safe surface for students to practice.

I believe an after-school yoga club can provide an opportunity for students to engage in physical fitness, improve their mental and emotional well-being, and help create community.

Not all students can afford their own mat and I do not want that to be the reason they cannot participate in our community and their own wellness.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
